Speak Out
The Planetary Society has posted a call to action, and it’s an opportunity to make your voice heard.
Under current plans, NASAs budget for fiscal year 2007 will severely cut back on space science efforts, and several important programs face being “delayed indefinitely (see syn. @ termination). The agency’s refined goals for the short term divert a significant amount of revenue into the Vision for Space Exploration, with much emphasis upon “completion” of the International Space Station, the Crew Exploration Vehicle, and manned spaceflight. While the CEV and similar programs are indeed noteworthy, there’s no sound rationale in quelling scientific research and exploration in order to bring other plans to fruition.
NASA has jumped the gun and we must act now to save science programs from cancellation. On Thursday, February 16 the House Science Committee will hold a hearing on the NASA 2007 budget. It is important for them to hear from the public.
Although the fiscal year 2007 budget does not take effect before October 2006, and Congress has not even approved it, NASA has already begun canceling 2006 research projects and mission studies, including the mission to Europa. Even programs Congress has voted into law are being “delayed indefinitely”.
Together with The Planetary Society, you can stop this from happening. We are asking Congress to intervene and direct NASA not to cancel programs before the Congress has to chance to consider them.
